Manager to Leader

Outline

Manager 2 Leader is a 4 day (3+1 follow-up) residential programme with Action Learning sessions for longer term learning support. It is suitable for managers with one or more years experience of leading others and wish to improve their skills, knowledge, self-awareness to be more effective in their leadership role.

The course includes a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator report and feedback from other course participants. As well as theory the programme is experiential and includes practical 1 hour exercises; some are in the outdoors and in future may contain an element of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility).

The programme is facilitated by two external trainers from Primeast who attend the whole process. Group size is small with a maximum of 14 participants this ensures a low 7:1 trainer ratio.

Key objectives

The programme addresses the following:
  • Ensure participants understand the nature of leadership and management
  • Introduce and reinforce essential management techniques:
    - Delegation
    - Objective setting
    - Management of performance
    - Managing conflict
    - Team working
  • Learn and practice core skills that enable the above
  • Encourage participants to explore their own preferences and strengths looking to future development as leaders in the business
  • Understand how active rather than passive engagement with team members strengthens organisational culture impacting positively on performance
  • Network with people in other parts of the wider business to share knowledge, best practice and aid integration
  • Have set targets for improving management and leadership to give value-added performance at work

Outcomes

  • Participants will return to work with specific and achievable actions linked to their everyday tasks, creating early successes on which to build further development
  • Participants will return to work with a renewed interest in their role as manager and leader
  • Participants will return to work knowing how to access support for management issues they face through their colleagues in an action learning group
  • Participants will be able to identify their own and others development and support needs
  • Participants will have strategies for goal setting, dealing with change and dealing with staff performance issues
